Mission Statement

WHERE GREAT MINDS ARE BORN

At Enchanted Castle Montessori School, our mission consists of providing a warm and nurturing environment where children feel safe. Our Montessori preschools offer various activities that are specifically designed to encourage each child’s growth. Through cooperative play and creative activities, kids reach their social, emotional and physical milestones naturally and with ease.

Our philosophy is based on the traditional Montessori program, which was designed to help young children to develop themselves into independent individuals. We believe that children from a very young age are ready and capable of learning vast amounts of knowledge which will give them a foundation for success throughout their school years.

The Montessori Education

A while back, Maria Montessori wrote a book called “The Absorbent Mind” which talked about the life of children from birth to 6 years old. During this period of time, a child’s mind acts like a sponge and absorbs everything in the environment around them. The child’s environment is crucial during this stage of development and should be prepared in a way that presents the child with any items that will allow them to learn. In the right environment, the child can absorb reading, writing, math, life skills and other materials, just as they absorb spoken language at home.

The school environment is designed to facilitate your child absorbing the variety of skills presented through Montessori materials in the same stress-free way they absorb spoken language at home. The quality program of Montessori materials presented through kindergarten will allow your child to take full advantage of the absorbent mind period with its unique explosion of brain growth and development. It is during this age that the child usually exhibits the largest growth in development.

The Montessori Education emphasizes 4 basic areas of learning: practical life, sensorial life, language and math.

Practical life aims to teach our children the care of the person, of others and of the physical environment where they live in. These activities include tasks that are familiar to the child: washing, polishing, setting the table, arranging flowers, etc. Through these and other activities, children achieve coordination and control of movement and exploration of his/her surroundings. Children learn to complete a task from beginning to end, they develop their will, self-discipline, the capacity of concentration and self-confidence.

Children at this age learn through senses more than through their intellect. The sensorial materials are tools for children to refine each of their senses. Each material isolates a specific quality: smell, size, weight, texture, flavor, color, etc. At this age, when children are “bombarded” with sensorial information, these materials allow them to find order and meaning to the world, raising his/her capacity of perception, favoring observation and a sense of admiration for everything that surrounds him/her.

When a child enters preschool, they enrich the language that they’ve already acquired. They are capable of using it intelligently with precision and beauty, slowly realizing its properties. They learn to write, starting with their senses (hearing and touching), and as a natural consequence, they learn to read. As an extension of language activities, children learn about geography, history, art and music. These areas help the child to know his/her surroundings and to realize the place the child occupies in this world. They teach him/her to respect and love for his/her environment, and they create a sense of solidarity with all humanity and his/her habitat.

Montessori materials help the child to learn and understand mathematical concepts when working with concrete materials that lead him/her intuitively to abstract concepts. They offer him/her sensorial impressions of the numbers and set the foundations for algebra and geometry.
